Electrolux Washer EF2 Error Code - Causes & Fix

EF2 means excess foam or suds in the drum. Most often caused by too much detergent or a clogged drain filter blocking water removal.

Electrolux Washer EF2 Error Code — What It Means

The EF2 code on your Electrolux washer is a suds or foam fault. The machine is detecting too much foam in the drum, typically during the spin cycle, and is warning that overflow or poor drainage may occur. Electrolux groups EF1, EF2, and EF3 together as drain and foam faults, with the most common causes being a blocked drain pipe or dirty filter. In the case of EF2 specifically, excess suds are present in the tub, and the washer cannot safely complete the spin cycle without risking foam overflow or improper water removal.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the washer and let any visible foam in the drum settle for 10 to 15 minutes before proceeding.
  2. Check detergent usage with the owner: confirm they are using HE (high-efficiency) detergent and not overdosing per the manufacturer label.
  3. Locate and remove the drain filter, usually behind a small access panel at the front lower corner of the washer, and clean out all lint, debris, coins, and sludge.
  4. Inspect the drain hose for kinks, clogs, and proper routing: remove the hose from the standpipe or laundry sink and flush it with water if needed.
  5. Check the drain pump by accessing it from the filter housing or rear panel: spin the impeller by hand to confirm it moves freely and remove any trapped debris.
  6. Reconnect all components, plug in the washer, and run a drain and spin cycle with no detergent to verify the machine drains completely and the code does not return.
  7. If the code returns after confirming proper drainage, replace the drain pump or the section of hose or filter housing that remains clogged or damaged.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Drain filterAmazon | Clean or replace if damaged or heavily clogged with sludge.
Drain pumpAmazon | Replace if impeller is jammed, pump is weak, or blockage cannot be cleared.
Drain hoseAmazon | Replace if kinked, split, or clogged beyond flushing.

When to Call a Pro

If you have cleaned the drain filter, flushed the drain hose, and verified proper HE detergent usage but the EF2 code still appears, the drain pump may be failing or there may be a wiring or control board issue preventing the washer from recognizing proper drainage. Call a qualified appliance technician to test the pump electrically, inspect the sump and internal hoses, and confirm the control board is reading the correct signals. If you are not comfortable removing panels, handling water spillage from the filter area, or testing the pump by hand, professional service is the safer choice.
