Electrolux Dryer E72 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E72 means the outlet thermistor is out of range. Usually caused by a failed NTC sensor or loose wiring. Check connections first.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Electrolux Dryer E72 Error Code — What It Means

E72 is an outlet thermistor out-of-range fault. The control board is receiving an invalid temperature signal from the outlet air temperature sensor circuit. This is not a simple overheating condition. The code means the sensor itself, its wiring harness, or the connection between them has failed or is sending a reading the board cannot accept.

Electrolux groups E71 and E72 together as outlet thermistor faults. The outlet NTC sensor measures the temperature of air leaving the drum. When resistance falls outside the expected range or the circuit is open or shorted, the control throws E72 and stops the cycle to protect the machine.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the dryer and wait two minutes to discharge any stored energy before opening panels or touching components.
  2. Access the outlet thermistor by removing the lower front panel or rear duct cover, depending on your model. The sensor is a small disc or bullet-shaped probe clipped to the outlet duct near the blower.
  3. Inspect all wiring and connectors from the thermistor to the control board for loose plugs, broken wires, melted insulation, or corroded pins. Reseat every connector firmly.
  4. Measure thermistor resistance with a multimeter set to ohms. Disconnect the sensor from the harness and probe both sensor terminals at room temperature. You should see approximately 5,000 ohms at 70°F. An open-circuit (infinite resistance) or near-zero reading means the sensor is bad.
  5. Replace the outlet thermistor if resistance is out of range or the reading jumps when you wiggle the probe. Clip the new sensor into the original mounting location and reconnect the harness.
  6. Repair or replace the harness if you found damaged wire or bad terminals. Cut out the damaged section and splice with crimp connectors and heat shrink, or order a replacement sensor harness from Electrolux parts.
  7. Reassemble and test the dryer on a timed-dry cycle. If E72 returns and both sensor and wiring verified good, suspect the main control board’s sensor input and consult a technician or replace the board.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Outlet thermistor / outlet NTC sensorAmazon | Match the part number stamped on your original sensor or use your dryer’s model number to cross-reference.
Thermistor wiring harnessAmazon | Order if connectors are melted or wire is cut. Some manufacturers sell the sensor and harness as an assembly.
Main control boardAmazon | Only required if sensor and harness test good but E72 persists. Verify your model number before ordering.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working with a multimeter, if you cannot locate the outlet thermistor in your model, or if the error returns after you have replaced the sensor and verified all wiring. Control board diagnosis requires interpreting voltage and resistance at the board’s sensor terminals. If the dryer is still under warranty or you have a service contract, contact Electrolux support before opening any panels. Thermistor replacement is straightforward for a DIYer with basic tools, but misdiagnosis can lead to unnecessary parts purchases.
