Electrolux Dryer E63 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E63 means a heater circuit fault, usually a grounded or shorted heating element. Most common fix: replace the heating element assembly.

Electrolux Dryer E63 Error Code — What It Means

The E63 code on an Electrolux or Frigidaire dryer signals a heater circuit fault. In almost every case, this means the heating element or heater assembly has developed a ground fault or short to the dryer’s metal frame. Technicians treat this as a problem in the heating element circuit until testing proves otherwise.

Less often, the fault can trace back to a failed cycling thermostat, damaged wiring, or a relay on the electronic control board. The code will prevent the dryer from heating until the fault is cleared.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the dryer completely and let the heater cool for at least 20 minutes before opening any panels.
  2. Try a code reset by holding the two specified front-panel buttons for about three seconds, then restore power and run a short heat cycle to see if the fault returns.
  3. Remove the rear panel or top/front panels (depending on your model) to access the heating element assembly and inspect all wire connections, terminals, and the element coil for burns, sag, or contact with the frame.
  4. Disconnect at least one wire from the heating element terminals and test continuity across the element with a multimeter (a good element typically reads around 20 to 59 Ω, often in the 26 to 27 Ω range).
  5. Test from each heater terminal to the dryer’s metal frame; any continuity means the element is grounded and must be replaced.
  6. If the element tests good, check the cycling thermostat for continuity (it should close when cold) and inspect the control board relays and solder joints for burn marks or damage.
  7. Reinstall the new or verified-good components, reassemble all panels, restore power, and run a full heat cycle to confirm the E63 code does not return.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Heating element or heater assemblyAmazon | Match by your dryer’s model number. The most common replacement for E63 faults.
Cycling thermostatAmazon | Replace if continuity tests fail or if the element and wiring check good.
Electronic control boardAmazon | Required only when the heater and thermostat test good but the fault persists. Verify all cheaper causes first.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you are uncomfortable working with 240-volt dryer circuits, if you cannot locate or access the heating element assembly, or if the fault returns after replacing the element and checking all wiring. A pro can perform relay-level diagnostics on the control board and has the tools to safely test live voltage at the heater terminals. If your dryer is still under warranty, contact Electrolux service before opening any panels.
