Electrical Panel Trip and Reset — What You Need to Know
When a circuit breaker trips in a residential, commercial, or industrial panel, it’s protecting you from overcurrent, short circuit, or ground fault. Before resetting, you need to understand why it tripped — otherwise it will trip again immediately.
Types of Circuit Breaker Trips
| Trip Type | Visual Indicator | Most Common Cause |
|---|---|---|
| Overload | Handle moves to middle position | Too many devices on the circuit |
| Short circuit | Handle moves to middle or OFF | Shorted wire, failed appliance |
| Ground fault (GFCI/AFCI) | Test/reset button popped out | Moisture, damaged cord |
| Thermal-magnetic | Handle to middle | Sustained overcurrent |
| Electronic (molded case) | Fault indicator LED | Programmable trip points |
How to Reset a Tripped Breaker
Residential / Commercial Panel (Square D, Eaton, Siemens, GE)
- Find the tripped breaker — It’s the one in the middle position (not fully ON or OFF)
- Turn it fully OFF first — Push handle to OFF position (don’t skip this step)
- Identify and remove the overload — Unplug devices on that circuit
- Wait 30 seconds — Let the breaker cool
- Reset to ON — Push handle firmly to ON
- If it trips again immediately — There’s a short circuit; don’t keep resetting
Industrial Molded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB)
- Press the RESET button or move handle to OFF then ON
- Check for mechanical trip indication (flag indicator if present)
- For motor branch circuit breakers, verify the motor and cable are not faulted before resetting
Ground Fault / AFCI Breakers
- Press the TEST button to confirm the breaker trips
- Press the RESET button firmly
- If it won’t reset, there is an active ground fault on the circuit — locate and fix it
Why Your Breaker Keeps Tripping
| Symptom | Root Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Trips immediately on reset | Short circuit in wiring or device | Find and repair short |
| Trips after 5-10 minutes | Thermal overload | Reduce load or upgrade circuit |
| Trips randomly | Loose connection, failing breaker | Tighten lugs, replace breaker |
| One phase trips, others fine | Three-phase imbalance | Check motor and load balance |
When to Call a Pro
Breakers that won’t stay reset, panels with visible burn marks, and breakers in arc flash hazard zones require a licensed electrician. Never work inside a live panel without proper training and PPE.
