- Clogged or kinked pressure switch hose — The rubber tube from the inducer housing to the pressure switch cracks, kinks, or fills with condensate, preventing the switch from seeing the correct suction level.
- Condensate drain blockage — A blocked drain forces water to back up into the inducer housing or pressure hose, creating a false pressure reading.
- Weak or failed inducer motor — An inducer that spins below rated speed cannot generate enough negative pressure to close the switch, even with a perfectly good hose and switch.
- Failed pressure switch — The switch diaphragm or contacts fail, preventing closure even when the inducer is generating proper draft.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Power off the furnace — Disconnect power and thermostat before opening the furnace cabinet.
- Remove and inspect the pressure switch hose — Detach both ends. Blow through to confirm it is clear. Check for cracks, pinches, or moisture inside. Replace if in doubt.
- Clear the condensate drain — Locate the condensate drain line and confirm it is draining freely. Pour water into the primary trap and verify flow. Clear any blockage with a wet/dry vacuum.
- Listen to the inducer at startup — Restore power and run a heat call. The inducer should sound strong and steady. A laboring or intermittent inducer indicates bearing wear or a failing motor.
- Test the pressure switch — Use a manometer to check the switch opens and closes at the correct water column rating (printed on the switch label). A switch that does not respond at rated pressure has failed.

- Reset and verify — Power cycle, restore heat call, and confirm E1 does not return.
