Daikin U9 Error Code — What It Means
U9 on a Daikin mini-split indicates an abnormally high discharge pressure on the refrigerant circuit. The high-pressure switch (HPS) in the outdoor unit opened because refrigerant pressure exceeded the safe operating limit — typically 400–600 PSI on R-410A systems depending on the model. The system shuts down to prevent compressor damage, refrigerant line rupture, or safety switch failure.

- Dirty or blocked outdoor coil — Condenser fins clogged with dirt, cottonwood, grass clippings, or debris restrict airflow, causing head pressure to climb rapidly in cooling mode.
- Outdoor fan motor failure — If the outdoor fan stops or runs slowly, the condenser coil cannot reject heat and high-side pressure rises quickly.
- Refrigerant overcharge — Too much refrigerant in the system drives up head pressure, especially in mild outdoor temperatures.
- Non-condensables (air/nitrogen) in the refrigerant circuit — Air or nitrogen in the system does not condense like refrigerant and raises head pressure significantly.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Inspect and clean the outdoor condenser coil — With power off, use a coil cleaning brush or low-pressure hose to clean fins from the inside out. Do not use a pressure washer — it bends fins and damages coil tubes.
- Confirm outdoor fan operation — Restore power and observe the outdoor fan during a cooling cycle. The fan should start within seconds of the compressor. A fan that doesn’t start or runs intermittently requires motor or capacitor replacement.
- Check the high-pressure switch — Test continuity across the HPS with an ohmmeter (power off). If it is open at ambient temperature and pressure, it may have failed in the tripped position — replace it.
- Have refrigerant charge verified — Only a licensed HVAC technician with manifold gauges should measure suction and discharge pressure. Overcharge or non-condensable contamination requires refrigerant recovery and recharge.
- Clear the U9 fault — Power off the outdoor unit for 3 minutes, then restore. If U9 clears and does not return after coil cleaning and fan verification, the dirty coil was the cause.
