Step-by-Step Fix
- Measure supply voltage at the outdoor unit — With the system attempting to run, use a true-RMS multimeter at the disconnect box or on the unit’s terminal block. Compare to the nameplate voltage range. If voltage is below the minimum (typically 187VAC for a 208/230V unit), the issue is upstream.
- Check utility voltage at the main panel — Measure voltage at the breaker. If low voltage is present at the panel, contact the utility company — this is a supply problem, not a unit problem.
- Inspect wiring for undersizing — If panel voltage is correct but voltage drops significantly at the unit, calculate voltage drop for the wire run. Upgrade wire gauge if drop exceeds 3%.
- Tighten all connections — With power off, inspect and tighten terminals at the disconnect, contactor, and terminal block inside the outdoor unit. Look for signs of arcing or heat discoloration.
