Bosch Washer E23 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E23 means water in the base pan triggered the leak sensor. Most likely fix: dry the base pan and check hoses, pump, and door seal for leaks.

Bosch Washer E23 Error Code — What It Means

The E23 code on a Bosch washer indicates that the machine has detected water in the base pan or leak tray, which is part of the AquaStop leak-detection safety system. The control board is responding to a leak detection event rather than identifying the exact failed component. Water in the base pan can come from an actual leak in hoses or seals, a blocked drain that causes overflow, or leftover water from a previous spill or transport event. The safety system will not release until the base is dry and the source is addressed.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Disconnect power and water supply before opening any panels or handling plumbing to make sure safe working conditions.
  2. Tilt the washer back carefully and remove the bottom front or rear access panel to expose the base pan area.
  3. Remove all water from the base pan using towels or a shop vacuum, and dry the tray completely so the sensor can reset.
  4. Inspect all hoses and seals for leaks by checking the inlet hoses, door boot, detergent drawer area, drain hose, and pump housing for moisture, mineral trails, or visible damage.
  5. Clean the drain pump filter by unscrewing the access cover, removing the filter or coin trap, clearing out lint and debris, and verifying the impeller spins freely by hand.
  6. Check the drain hose routing for kinks, blockage, or loose connections at the back of the machine and at the standpipe or sink drain.
  7. Reassemble and run a power cycle by plugging the machine back in and running a short rinse or spin cycle to confirm the E23 code is cleared and no new leaks appear.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Drain pumpAmazon | Replace if the pump housing is cracked, leaking, or the impeller is damaged and will not spin freely.
Door boot sealAmazon | Choose if you find tears, cracks, or visible leaks around the front door gasket during inspection.
Inlet hose setAmazon | Use if rear inlet hoses show bulges, cracks, or loose fittings that are the source of the leak.
Leak sensor / float switchAmazon | Order if the base is dry but the E23 code persists, indicating false triggering by the sensor hardware.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if the E23 code returns immediately after drying the base pan and no visible leak is found, or if you are uncomfortable tilting the machine and accessing internal plumbing. A technician can perform component-level diagnostics on the leak sensor wiring and control board inputs, and can identify hidden leaks in hard-to-reach areas like the tub-to-pump assembly or internal dispenser plumbing. If your washer is still under warranty or covered by a Bosch service plan, professional service may be included at no cost.
