Bosch Refrigerator E20 Error Code — What It Means

The E20 error code on a Bosch refrigerator indicates a communication fault between the main control board and the display control module. This is not a cooling system or refrigerant problem. Instead, the two electronic boards inside your refrigerator have lost their data connection, typically because of a loose, corroded, or damaged wire harness or a failure in one of the boards themselves.

When the main control board cannot talk to the display module, the refrigerator posts E20 and may stop responding to temperature adjustments or other commands. The good news is that this is usually a wiring or connector issue rather than a compressor or sealed-system fault, so many cases can be resolved by inspecting and reseating the harness connections between the two boards.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the circuit breaker to cut all power before you open any panels or touch any boards.
  2. Remove the display panel or interior cover to access the display control module and locate the wire harness connector that runs to the main control board (consult your service manual for the exact location on your model).
  3. Inspect the connector and harness for any visible damage, corrosion on the pins, broken plastic latches, pinched wires, or burn marks on either board.
  4. Disconnect and firmly reseat the harness connector at both ends, making sure the plug locks securely and all pins make solid contact.
  5. Restore power and check whether the E20 code clears and the display responds normally to button presses and temperature changes.
  6. Replace the wire harness if you found any visible cuts, worn insulation, or continuity faults when you tested the individual conductors with a multimeter.
  7. Replace the failed board (main control board or display control module) if the code returns immediately after reseating and the harness itself is intact, or if you see obvious burn damage on one of the boards.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Main control boardAmazon | Use the part number printed on your existing board or your refrigerator’s model tag to order an exact match.
Display control moduleAmazon | Verify compatibility with your refrigerator model number before ordering.
Wire harness (main board to display)Amazon | Order the specific harness for your model if you find visible damage or continuity faults in the existing cable.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are uncomfortable working with live electrical panels, if the fault returns after you reseat the connectors and you are not confident diagnosing which board has failed, or if both boards show no visible damage but the communication fault persists. A qualified appliance technician has the diagnostic tools to isolate board-level failures quickly and can source and install the correct replacement parts without risk of further damage to your refrigerator’s electronics.
