Amana Washer Won't Spin - Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

A failed lid switch is the most common reason an Amana washer won't spin. Test the switch for continuity and replace if it shows no reading.

Amana Washer Won’t Spin — What’s Happening

When your Amana washer won’t spin, the machine is being prevented from entering or completing the spin cycle because its safety or control logic is not detecting a valid spin condition. The washer may fill, agitate, and drain normally, but then sit idle or repeatedly pause when it should spin water out of the load.

On Amana and Whirlpool-made top-load models, the most common hard stop is a lid-related safety input. The washer will not spin if the lid switch assembly does not prove the lid is closed. Other triggers include an unbalanced or overloaded tub, a drain problem that leaves standing water, a failed drive component such as a belt or motor coupler, or a control board fault.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the symptom by running a cycle and noting whether the washer fills, drains, and agitates normally but fails only at spin.
  2. Remove the load, redistribute the laundry evenly in the tub, and retry the cycle to rule out a simple balance issue.
  3. Inspect the suspension rods on top-load machines for dislodgement or breakage, and replace the full set if one rod is damaged.
  4. Test the lid switch for continuity using a multimeter with the lid closed. A good switch will show continuity (0 ohms or an audible beep), and no continuity means the switch has failed.
  5. Check that the tub is draining fully and inspect the drain hose and pump for blockages or restrictions.
  6. On belt-driven models, remove the cabinet or rear panel and inspect the drive belt for cracks, fraying, looseness, or glazing. Replace the belt if damaged.
  7. On models with a motor coupler, inspect the coupler for cracking or breakage and replace if damaged.
  8. Run the washer’s built-in diagnostic mode if available to read stored error codes, then use the model’s tech sheet or service manual to map any code to the failed component.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Lid switch assemblyAmazon | Model-specific. Test for continuity before replacing.
Suspension rod kitAmazon | Replace the full set rather than one rod to maintain even balance.
Drive beltAmazon | For belt-driven top-load models. Check part number on your model’s tag.
Motor couplingAmazon | Rubber coupler between motor and transmission on direct-drive models.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you are uncomfortable working with electrical testing, disassembling the cabinet, or handling drive components under spring tension. If you have replaced the lid switch and checked the balance and drain system but the washer still will not spin, the issue is likely in the control board or motor, and a technician with diagnostic software and the correct service manual can pinpoint the fault and source the right board or motor assembly for your model.
