Amana LF Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Amana LF means the washer detected slow or no water fill. Most often caused by closed supply valves or clogged inlet screens.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Amana LF Error Code — What It Means

The Amana LF error code (sometimes displayed as F8 E1 or Lo FL) tells you the washer is not detecting the correct amount of incoming water within the expected time window. The machine started a fill cycle but the flow rate was too low or water did not enter at all. This is a fill-timeout fault, not a sensor failure in most cases.

The control board monitors how quickly the tub fills and throws LF when the fill takes too long. In practical terms, something is restricting water from entering the drum or allowing it to drain back out during the fill attempt.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Wait 10 minutes and try restarting the washer. Amana advises a short cool-down period to allow the control to reset before retrying the cycle.
  2. Confirm both supply valves are fully open. Turn the hot and cold shutoff valves behind the machine counterclockwise all the way and verify both hoses are connected to the correct taps.
  3. Inspect the inlet hoses for kinks, pinches, cracks, or internal blockage. Straighten any bends and replace hoses that feel stiff, cracked, or have restricted internal diameter.
  4. Clean the inlet screens at the back of the washer where hoses attach. Use a small brush and mild soap to remove sediment and mineral scale without pulling the screen out of its seat.
  5. Check drain hose installation. The standpipe must be at least 39 inches above the floor, and the drain hose should insert no more than 4.5 inches into the pipe. Do not tape or seal the hose into the standpipe.
  6. Test house water pressure if valves, hoses, and screens are clear. Run a bucket test at the supply tap or use a pressure gauge to rule out weak municipal or well pressure.
  7. Test and replace the water inlet valve if the control is sending voltage but water does not flow. Disconnect power, remove the top or rear panel, locate the valve assembly, and check for continuity and mechanical operation. Replace the valve if it fails to open when energized.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Water inlet valve assemblyAmazon | Replace if valve fails to open mechanically or shows no continuity when tested.
Washer inlet hoses (pair)Amazon | Replace any hose that is kinked, cracked, or internally clogged with sediment.
Drain hose assemblyAmazon | Use if the existing drain hose is damaged or if you need to correct improper standpipe installation.

When to Call a Pro

If you have confirmed that both supply valves are open, hoses are clear, inlet screens are clean, and the drain hose is installed correctly but the LF code persists, the inlet valve or control board may be faulty. Replacing the inlet valve requires accessing internal components, disconnecting wire harnesses, and sometimes removing the cabinet. If you are not comfortable working with water connections and electrical testing inside the washer, or if replacing the valve does not resolve the fault, call a qualified appliance technician to diagnose control-board or pressure-switch issues that are not covered by the common external causes.
